Right now I am using a very cheap craft wood burner... and it was great to get me started and see if I could learn the technique. I just bought a much better burner called a "Razertip" dual burner and heavy duty burning pens. [link] The thing with the cheap burners is you are stuck using very cheap soft woods.. since it doesn't get hot enough to burn on the harder better cuts of wood.
